A Quickie With.....Jenna Jaxon

Erotic Inspiration

I have gotten my inspiration for the erotic romance I write from a totally eclectic body of sources.

Hog Wild was inspired by the Three Little Pigs fairy tale--except it’s a fractured fairy tale with the pigs as HOG Harley riders and the wolf a she-wolf looking for some action, both on and off a motorcycle. Let’s just say she does her share of “blowing” these pigs down, with or without a house.

With Almost Perfect, a question popped into my head on a subway in Washington, DC. Who would be the absolutely worst person to turn up if a woman was about to have a one-night-stand with her fantasy lover? Answer: her ex-husband. And that became my story, set on a deserted island, complete with unexpected Kama Sutra positions.

For my most recent release, 7 Days of Seduction, I was the one seduced—by a song. Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” had such fun lyrics and a party beat that I wanted to know the story behind the girl whose “pictures of last night ended up online” and “had a ménage a trois” while in “a blacked-out blur.” That caught my imagination and seemed to have so many possibilities for erotic episodes, that I immediately began planning my version of “Last Friday Night,” which turned into 7 Days and included sex in a shower with a stranger, and afternoon tryst in an office, and, of course, the ménage a trois.  Lots of sexual adventures stemmed from that Friday party!

I’ve got no clue where my next idea for an erotic novella will come from. But I bet it’s going to be wild!

About the Author
Jenna Jaxon is a multi-published author of historical  and contemporary romance.  She is currently finishing revisions to  her third full length novel, As Long As You’re Mine, set in Victorian London and Richmond, Virginia.  Her Georgian novel, Only Scandal Will Do, the first in what she hopes will be a series of five interconnecting novels, will be released in May 2012. Jenna has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager.  A romantic herself, she has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise.  She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She lives in Virginia with her family and a small menagerie of pets.  When not reading or writing, she indulges her passion for the theatre, working with local theatres as a director.  She often feels she is directing her characters on their own private stage. She has equated her writing to an addiction to chocolate because once she starts she just can’t stop.

PictureI've been asked over the last few months why I chose to write erotica. Well the easiest answer would be because people like trashy novels with characters that have hot dirty sex. The kind of stories that make you want to put on your highest heels, something from Frederick's of Hollywood, meet your man at the front door and have mind blowing sex all over your house while the kids are at your mother's!

Or meeting a handsome stranger in a loud dimly lit nightclub, feeling his hands in your hair, smelling his cologne as he pulls you tightly against him and your lips meet his, all the while wondering if your roommates will still be out if you leave right now?

love/life: Hot in HoustonErotica should set your senses on edge, make your mind wonder (and sometimes even your hands), and most of all it should be shared with the one you lust or love the most.

“love/life – Hot in Houston” releasing on November 7th through Firefly & Wisp Publishing is the erotic romance novel for a new generation of readers. Think “True Confessions” for a 21st century world.

About The Author
"I'm the youngest of six kids in my family. I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers who all still live relatively close to where we grew up. I'm the wonderer. I've always wanted to live in the big city and have something to do at any time of the day or night. In 2000, I got my wish by moving to Dallas Ft Worth. I love it! The best of the world can be found here from restaurants to shopping. At the moment my favorite place to have dinner is Gloria's on Dallas Parkway and my favorite store to shop in is IKEA. If you ever get around my neck of the woods, give them a try! You won't regret it. I've loved to read as long as I can remember. Reading was a way for me to visit far away places and get to know some really wonderful people. Fern Arable (the girl from Charlotte's Web) was the first girl I identified with. Being raised on a farm in a small town. I could relate to her because she was like me. Books have a way of doing that. I do my best to write interesting stories that people can identify with. You might not be a cardboard cutout of a character but I'll bet something makes you smile and nod your head when you see a character struggle or achieve something that you have dealt with or are dealing with" - Goodreads

A Quickie With.....Lila Shaw

Heat levels, those little licks of flame beneath a book's title or the ratings on a 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 scale--do they drive sales or not?

My publisher says the higher the heat the higher the sales...in general. For me, this doesn't seem to be the case.

I have eleven books published between my two pen names (five are anthologies) with heat levels ranging from sweet (no sex, not even behind closed doors) to one with exhibitionist ménage sex. Guess which book has sold the least number of copies despite good reviews? Yep, the ménage. But conversely, the sweet romance hasn't sold the most. My best sellers thus far have been the ones in the mid-range, regardless of which pen name I've used. They have also been the most contemporary in feel, even though one is a paranormal / urban fantasy'ish tale.

Perhaps it's because I am more comfortable writing at those medium heat levels. They do say if an author is uncomfortable with the sex scenes she writes, she will transfer that discomfort to the readers. Perhaps it's because the absence of really graphic, shocking sex requires a heavier emphasis on romanticism, and maybe I'm better at those wispy euphemisms than I am at wielding the "c", "p" and "f" words.

As a reader, I know my tastes lean more toward vanilla than chunky monkey or rocky road. I'd probably enjoy reading (and writing) ménage more if I could get over my puritanical belief that "nice girls don't." The only ménage scene I've written is steeped in dubious consent or dub-con. Oddly enough I can tolerate dub-con more readily than ménage. Dub-con gets me over the nice girl speed bump and gives me permission to explore dark corners I might have otherwise avoided. Dub-con is probably why I also like vampire stories (though I've not published any yet.) Interestingly, there are many who won't touch dub-con but will embrace ménage. Both command high heat levels and both have their fans and detractors.

What else drives heat besides ménage though? My publisher, Evernight, defines its highest heat level as "Erotic content. Graphic sex and adult language. Hardcore content. Will offend mainstream readers," emphasis mine. Makes sense but when mainstream readers are devouring Fifty Shades of Grey and begging for more, the mainstream just cranked the thermostat up several degrees. I mean when you see Fifty Shades magazine "for those who live the lifestyle" sitting right next to Better Homes and Gardens in your mainstream grocery store, what else can a writer whip out (no pun intended) to shock the mainstream?

Don't answer that!

About the Author:
Lila Shaw is the pen name for a writer of works of erotica and erotic romance.  Her erotic writings typically involve strong-willed women with feminist tendencies, and are often playful, sarcastic and even silly.  She believes if you can’t occasionally laugh at the physical aspects of love, you’re taking life far too seriously…unless the condom breaks, then you have every right to fret.
She lives in the Pacific NW with her very funny husband she calls “the Silverback” and their two sons.  She works full time as an operations / finance manager while her home remains a venue of domestic idleness other than the revving iMac in her office.

Description:
For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You comes an erotic, emotionally charged romance between a powerful man who’s never heard “no” and a fiery woman who says “yes” on her own terms.

He was the one man I couldn’t avoid. And the one man I couldn’t resist.

Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me. Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past—and risk breaking us apart. But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him—and us—forever.

A Quickie With.....R. Brennan

Why Write Erotica?
By R. Brennan

I suppose the question is as good as any, and one I’ve been asked more than a handful of times since embarking on my “authorly” journey about a year and a half ago. When I started to think about my answer to this oft asked question, I came to the realization historical romance writers have been dealing with this query since the coining of the phrase I know many erotica and romance authors love to hate -- “bodice rippers”. I think in their day, historical romance authors were the erotic romance writers of the time. And let me tell you, when I was a high school senior, I was eating up these stories at a speed of three a week, and filling my brain with more purple prose and sensual interludes than a girl could ever need. But, I just couldn’t get enough.

Until the fateful day when the ending of the novel I devoured didn’t digest well. In fact, it annoyed me to no end and left me feeling cheated. At that moment, I decided I could write a romance just as good as this one, so why was I spending all my money on other people’s stories? So I sat down, quite full of myself and my ability to weave a tale, and started writing. I managed a whole three chapters of that fledgling attempt, before I realized how much research was involved in writing a historical. I still have those first chapters and every so often I will take them out and give them a once over -- just to remind me of where I started, and how far I’ve come
.
Anyway, when I got myself back into writing after a long hiatus of life, jobs, boyfriends, a husband, and eventually children, I realized most of the stories I was writing had elements of romance, and the romantic scenes that formed in my brain, were not of the “virginal variety”. In fact, some were quite steamy. After I completed my first erotic story, a horror short for an anthology seeking submissions, I gave it to my darling bo-hunk, Pete to read for me.

His words to me when he’d finished reading cemented my fate as an author of erotica -- “Hun, this is good. Like amazing good. You need to stop writing all that other stuff and just write erotica. This IS your wheelhouse.”

While I do still write more mainstream fiction, there was no going back for me after that. I try to spend as much of my writing time on “adult” stories as I do everything else.

I am an erotica author, and damned proud to be one. Besides, I like to think I am following another age old adage when I write steamy love stories -- that being WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. I am happy to say, I know sex *grins*

What I’ve Been Reading “After Fifty”

after fifty

Firstly, a gigantic thanks to Siobhan for letting me loose on her blog today as part of her “Naughty November” series, it’s much appreciated!

Naughty November is such a good idea, it seems that 2012 has been the year where everyone’s been a little more open about reading “naughty” books, I know I certainly have! I’ve been running a feature on My keeper shelf called “After Fifty” where I review all the hot little books I’ve read since the Fifty Shades trilogy changed the book world forever. Since falling in love with Fifty I’ve been on the constant lookout for similar-ish books I can obsess about and OMG I’ve found tonnes of them!

I do have certain requirements:

1. It’s got to be steamy hot (obviously)
2. It’s got to have a bit of romance.
3. I’m very partial to a smouldering alpha male with “issues” (no Young Adult boys need apply)
4. I also like any of the following: tattoo’s, a Harley Davidson, a dodgy past, a uniform *fans self* a sense of humour and a protective streak a mile wide.
5. Oh, and I’m ok with billionaires!

What I’m reading after Fifty is actually one of my most visited posts EVER with 2,439 views which for my little blog is HUGE!!! You guys need to come over and check out all the naughty books I’ve squeeeeed about this year I’m pretty sure there’s something for everyone. As I’m ALWAYS looking for new recommendations so feel free to leave me a comment below and I’ll add it to my enormous After Fifty TBR listJ

Feel free to check out Lesley's Blog and her amazing After Fifty Feature.

A Quickie With.... Eileen Gormely, 1/2 of Evie Hunter + Giveaway

My Writing Space by Eileen Gormely

I love closing the door, and surrounding myself by my peaceful haven of books and paper and pens, so suitable for writing a masterpiece. Er, not so much. It’s a lovely dream, but miles away from where I actually work.
I write in the extension. This is best described as a garden shed attached to the house. One entire wall is lined with tools, nuts, bolts, oil, glue, paint, drill bits and discarded kettles.

Another wall is lined with the washing machine, freezer and laundry baskets.
I work at an old sewing table. The sewing machine has gone to the great recycling yard in the sky, but the table still has the foot pedals and reel holders, and that’s where my laptop lives. It’s tucked in between two book cases, so I can grab dictionaries and reference books without having to get up.

When I was writing my last Regency, the table was piled twelve deep with memoirs, history books, 19th century dictionaries, and maps of the Peninsula. But for The Pleasures of Winter, it accumulated a lot of kinky paraphernalia that I hope no one will ask me about.

Under the table is the guinea pig who keeps a wary eye out for the cat, but likes to play with my toes when I’m writing. The hamster is in a cage beside the table, and the cat likes to come in and watch it, hoping for the day when the door is not properly closed and it can get at the hamster.

The question everyone asks when they see where I work is: Why? The house isn’t that small that I couldn’t find a corner that would be more comfortable to work in.

But the extension has two big advantages. One, it has huge windows and more natural light than anywhere else in the house. And two, it’s right beside the kitchen, and a regular source of caffeine. What else is important?

Evie Hunter is actually two authors Caroline McCall and Eileen Gormley who met at a creative writing workshop in Dublin in 2010. On discovering that they shared a passion for erotic fiction, they became the best of friends. In early 2012 they got a chance to co-write a series of erotic novellas for an American publisher. When they completed the second one without killing each other, they decided to take on something bigger. Eventually, they emerged into daylight, clutching THE PLEASURES OF WINTER, saying 'Never again' ... until the next time.

A Quickie With....Sandra Bunino

What exactly is “BDSM-lite”? I mean BDSM is BDSM, right? Actually, there are so many degrees of this sexual preference, you can be practicing it and not even know it! Let’s start with the basics. BDSM is an acronym combining the practices of bondage and discipline (B/D), dominance and submission (D/s), and sadism and masochism (S&M) (that last one sounds scary, doesn’t it?). There are a couple of fundamental constants with any BDSM activity. First, play must be safe, sane, and consensual (SSC), and second, a deep level of trust is imperative between the parties involved.

Think of BDSM like the game of trust you played as a kid. Remember when you stood in front of your friend and leaned backward? If he/she wasn’t there, you would’ve toppled over and made a complete fool or yourself. How did you feel before you purposely fell backward? Scared...excited...trusting? Sure, you wouldn’t fall backwards unless you were pretty damn sure that person would catch you. You trusted them implicitly. Same goes for BDSM. One person (the “sub” or the “bottom”) gives themselves over to the other (the “dom” or the “top”) without question.

So how is BDSM-lite different from hard core BDSM? Everyone’s definitions are unique but I like to think the “lite” version takes certain hard core elements and focuses on erotic sexy play rather than the discipline and pain infliction. The scene is playful, not serious. Take restraints for example. They can be in the form of a fluffy pair of handcuffs, the dom’s belt tied around the sub’s wrists behind her back, silky sashes tied to the headboard, velcro ankle restraints, or simply the dom pinning his sub’s hands over her head against the wall. Once restrained, they sub is at the dom’s mercy and just like in the childhood game, she must trust the dom to ensure she receives pleasure without getting hurt. The dom has the responsibility and pleasure of total access to the subs body to kiss, lick and tease her to his hearts content. Sexy, right?

Curious about BDSM lite? Check out my new series, The Satin Rose Experience (SRE). The introduction is the lead story in the Keyboards and Kink Anthology. Mia’s Submission (The Satin Rose Experience, book 1) continues Mia and Asher’s love story. Then meet Brooke, Ty and Jackson in Brooke’s Wish (available November 2nd).
