5th Century BC, Athens

Humble sculptor, Nikodimos, toils away in his workshop to create a sumptuous marble masterpiece of Athena Parthenos. His beautiful, noble creation is destined to be housed in the Parthenon. Nikodimos has no reason to suspect that it will not remain in its rightful home forever...

19th Century AD, Athens

Lord Quimby, rich, powerful and greedy, is enchanted by the wealth of the Parthenon. Unconcerned by the locals' distress, Lord Quimby plunders the Parthenon of her finest artefacts. His twelve-year-old nephew, Maximilian, helplessly watches his Uncle's savage devastation of the treasure as it is shipped off to England, never to be seen again on Greek soil.

Present Day

Young Cambridge student Max Perceval unearths the horror of his late ancestor's murky deeds and realises all is not what it seems in the Museum of Classical Antiquities. In order to locate the treasured marble, and right the wrongs of the past, Max must take matters into his own hands and confront the ghosts of the Quimby dynasty.

Based on a True Story

The Parthenon Marbles are a collection of Classical Greek marble sculptures that form part of the Parthenon temple in Athens, built nearly 2,500 years ago. They are considered amongst the finest examples of Greek art. In the early 19th century however, the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire removed about half of the remaining sculptures from the Parthenon. They were first exhibited in 1807 in London before they went on show at the British Museum in 1817. Ever since the sculptures have been on display to the public in the British Museum. However, since the early 1830s, Greek governments have argued for the return of all the Parthenon sculptures to Athens and this debate is still ongoing today.

Joanna D’Este Clark fell in love with the classical world and all-things-Greek while studying architecture and history of art at a Canadian university. For the last ten years she has been a strong supporter of the BCRPM (British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece). She is a member of Marbles Re-United, and in 2016 was invited to speak about her exciting new work at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Joanna lives in London although she dreams of spending a lot more time in Greece. Plunder with Intent is inspired by her passion to see the Parthenon Marbles finally come home.

#BlogTour: A Pug Like Percy by Fiona Harrison

Today is my turn of the blog tour for "A Pug Like Percy". We have a fab extract from the book, which I am currently reading just now, so sit back and relax and enjoy. And don't forget to go grab yourself a copy as the book is out now!!

It was an unusually warm October day and as the weather was so nice Gail had suggested Jenny and I join her for a quick walk to the park to make the most of the fresh air after lunch. It had been a week since Jenny left the hospital and it was a treat to have her company. She rarely had enough energy to join us on a trip outside and so I had walked rigidly by her side in case she had felt faint or had a fall much to, Gail and Jenny’s amusement.

Yet despite the laughter, Gail and I had made sure Jenny had taken things slowly, and the little girl had rested on Gail’s arm for much of the journey. Jenny seemed to have taken the news that she needed a transplant relatively well, telling her mother that a new heart was better than an old crappy one that stopped her living a normal life. Despite the bad language, which Gail had lovingly turned a blind eye to, she had shaken her head in awe at her daughter and with Simon’s agreement they had both decided to let Jenny live a little. This not only meant short, slow walks to the park, but Simon had even taken Jenny to the movies and out for a pizza with one of her mates from the hospital.

Although there had been a shift in attitude, that did not stop me and Gail watching her every step like hawks. By the time we reached the park, I was shattered from concentrating so hard, but the sight of Peg at the track on the other side, soon gave me a surge of energy. Quickly barking goodbye to Jenny and Gail, who were by now settled on a park bench, I raced off to join my love. With the sun beaming down on her blonde fur she had never looked lovelier and I wasted no time telling her so as I reached her side.

‘You’re so pretty Peg,’ I yapped quietly. ‘I’ve missed you.’
Walking towards her, I rested my nose against hers and looked deeply into her chocolate brown eyes.
‘Awww Percy, you only saw me two days ago,’ Peg woofed as she nuzzled her cheek against mine in greeting.
I knew she was right, but two days had felt like a lifetime. I was just about to tell her so, when Bugsy came bounding towards us.
‘Hello! What are you doing? Are you kissing? That’s disgusting! Look Heather, Heather, Heather,’ he barked as the German Shepherd closely followed by Jake joined us.
‘For heaven’s sake Bugsy, leave them alone,’ Heather chided as she sat on the grass, her jaw loose and tongue lolling in happiness. ‘It’s lovely to see you both, and even lovelier you’re together. It’s nice to hear some good news for once, isn’t it Jake?’
‘Absolutely delighted for you both,’ Jake barked as he turned his hips towards the sun to warm them.
As I looked at each of my friends, their eyes shining with happiness for mine and Peg’s good fortune,

I flushed bright red beneath my black fur. I disliked being the centre of attention and felt strangely uneasy about being so happy when my family were coping with so much.
Heather barked sharply, to catch my attention. ‘Percy! You shouldn’t feel guilty for enjoying a bit of happiness while you can.’
Peg rounded on me, barking her agreement with Heather. ‘Life’s too short not to grab every opportunity with both paws when it’s offered Percy. I know your family has problems which is even more of a reason to celebrate our happiness.’
‘I know,’ I replied. ‘I’m just worried about them.’
‘We’ve all been there,’ she woofed quietly. ‘It’s heart-breaking when your parents are hurting and you don’t know how to help. Sally was devastated when she lost a baby last year.’
My eyes widened. ‘You never told me Sally had been through something so traumatic. I’m really sorry to hear that Peg.’
‘It was pretty awful,’ Peg replied. ‘I’ve been with Sally since I was taken from my doggy mum two years ago and we’ve always been inseparable. When she met this bloke six months after I moved in, she fell head over heels in love with him. Anyway, when she found out she was pregnant, she also found out he was married and I think the shock of that led to her losing the baby.’
‘Poor Sally,’ I barked, not knowing what else to say.
‘That’s why I worry about her so much,’ Peg replied. ‘Since losing the man and the baby overnight she seems desperate to find the happiness she lost and I fret she’s throwing herself at any man to find that happiness.’
I rested a paw on Peg’s. ‘I suppose that’s natural. She’s still grieving and it’s all a lot for anyone to cope with.’
‘It is, but I do wish she’d wise up. Thankfully, Heather, Jake and Bugsy helped me through it all.

That’s what friends do.’
‘I know,’ I replied. ‘You’ve all been wonderful.’ ‘Nonsense,’ Peg woofed. ‘All I’m saying is our owners have to take responsibility for their problems too, no matter how much we try to help. What’s happened to Sally has made me realise that when I have puppies I need to be very careful about finding the right daddy.’

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fiona Harrison is a dog lover and writer from the West Country who lives with her husband and their menagerie of pets. Lucky enough to have a family who always supported her creative writing attempts, as a child, Fiona routinely entertained them with a variety of stories covering everything from Margaret Thatcher to Roland Rat. Eventually Fiona realised there was not much of a market for Mrs T stories, and moved to London, spending her days working as a journalist and her evenings sleeping in cramped flats, missing her beloved family pets. After several years, she decided a life without dogs or cats was no life at all and after getting married to a fellow animal lover, she moved out of the big city to concentrate on her two passions; animals and writing.

Now, living in a house rather than a shoebox, Fiona happily spends her days writing, often with a pet on her lap for company and inspiration. A Pug like Percy is her first novel.

Cadiz: A city for epic romance

Why Cadiz? Quite simply because to my mind it is the perfect location for romance. I have visited many cities across the world, but few have captivated me like this Spanish jewel, and the day I first stood on its rocky shore and gazed out to sea, I just knew I must situate a love in the city known as ‘the Bride of the Sea’:

“Not quite an island, it was a city of dazzling white houses set on a rocky peninsula, jutting into the sea with the sapphire-blue waters wrapped around it. A jewel that towered over the Atlantic, she well deserved her name. Brilliant and sparkling like a diamond in the sunshine, Alexandra found her beauty was just as arresting at night, under a velvet sky studded with stars, when the city was reflected in the almost unearthly phosphorescence of the ocean.” (from Indiscretion)

Here are my favourite romantic aspects of Cadiz, which I hope may inspire you to visit the city yourself someday, whether in person or through reading Andalucían Nights:
  • The light: The Moors compared the city to a ‘dish of silver in a bowl of blue’, so vivid are the colours. It is a lovely city; the most beautiful in Spain, I think. I love the contrast between the blue waters and the white-washed buildings.
  • The history: Cadiz is the oldest city in Spain, and one of the oldest in all of Western Europe. There is such a long and diverse history to explore, from the vestiges of Greek and Roman citizens through to the influence of the Moors and then the scars of squabbles with the French and English. The neo-classical architecture is quite arresting as you stroll from plaza to plaza, and the cathedral is an interesting mix of baroque, neo-classical and rococo styles. One of the things I like best about it is that old wins out over new, because there is so little space to develop on the little slice of land where Cadiz lies and the land is too sandy for the foundations required for high rises. Consequently, the skyline of the city has been little changed in the past few hundred years.
  • The vistas: This is the city of watch towers: in the 18th century it had no fewer than 160 towers from which men looked out for merchant ships. The tallest to stand to this day is the Tavira Tower, atop which intrepid visitors to the city can take in panoramic views through the cámaraoscura, a room in which the view is projected via a convex lens.
  • The legends: Along with the beautiful buildings and the shimmering sea from which you are never far, there is a sense of magic about the place, a connection to mythology. For example, in Moorish times, it is said, a massive gold idol (of Muhammad, according to some) was constructed just outside Cadiz. Apparently, it magically kept sailors from the city by blowing strong winds and whipping up powerful currents in the strait of Gibraltar. And what of the creation of the city? Well, if you believe legend, that was Hercules’s doing. According to Greek mythology, Hercules founded the city of Gadeira (Cádiz) en route to carrying out his tenth labour.
  • The spirit: The 19th-century French writer and traveller Théophile described Cadiz as ‘lively and luminous’, and many call it Cadiz Joyosa. Nowhere is this joyful spirit more evident than at the annual Cadiz Carnival, which is the carnival to visit in Spain. It’s a dazzling, fast-paced spectacle that leaves you leaves your head spinning with sights and sounds and sensations. Olé!

*Blog Tour* The Disappearance by Annabel Kantaria

Why did you choose for your character to have a back story that took place in India?

I borrowed a little from real life here. My own father was born in India and, like Audrey, I grew up with tales of life in Bombay, and I think those stories, told to me over dinners as a young child, really stuck in my head. India was always this parallel universe in my head; a place I longed to go.

My father left India when he was four years old and yes, you guessed it, he sailed to England on an ocean liner. I have a faded picture of him on board the ship and I’m fascinated by what it must have been like to make that voyage from balmy India to cold, grey England. In The Disappearance, Audrey could easily have made the trip to Bombay by aeroplane but I wanted her desire to go on a cruise for her 70th birthday to be rooted in her history – so this cathartic sea journey was born.

The decision to base Audrey’s past in India was also quite selfish as it meant I got to spend a lot of time reading about life in India in the ‘60s and ‘70s, which didn’t feel like work at all. Writing those sections of the book was very enjoyable – one morning I Googled how to say a couple of words in Hindi and then spent a whole morning completing an online language lesson!

My daily word count dropped noticeably as I spent hours poring over old photographs and accounts of life in Bombay in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and losing myself in accounts of what the sea voyage would have been like. I’d do that all morning and find it really hard to get my head back into 2015 when it was time to go and pick up the children from school!

Audrey Bailey will never forget the moment she met Ralph Templeton in the sweltering heat of a Bombay café. Her lonely life over, she was soon married with two small children. But things in the Templeton household were never quite what they seemed.

Now approaching 70, and increasingly a burden on the children she’s always felt distanced from, Audrey plans a once-in-a-lifetime cruise around the Greek isles. Forcing twins Lexi and John along for the ride, the Templetons set sail as a party of three – but only two will return.

On the night of her birthday, Audrey goes missing…hours after she breaks the news that the twins stand to inherit a fortune after her death. As the search of the ship widens, so does the list of suspects – and with dark clues emerging about Audrey’s early life, the twins begin to question if they can even trust one another.

*Blog Tour* Breathe by Leila Segal

TITLE: Breathe: Stories from Cuba
AUTHOR: Leila Sagal
PAGES: 132
PUBLISHED: 21st Jan 2016
PUBLISHER: Flipped Eye
GENRE: Short Stories

Breathe is a collection that explores the heart of Fidel Castro-era Cuba; an outsider's look that is balanced by a weight of empathy to illuminate truths that lie couched between the island's propaganda and the Western media's portrayal. Characters from Europe and the USA in Swimming, Taxi and Sabbatical seem to want to hold on to the indulgences that their countries offer them, while praising Cubans for the more abstemious lives they lead and seeking to sample what the locals experience; in Siempre Luchando, I Never See Them Cry and The Party, romantic liaisons strengthen or buckle under the strain of the minute exploitations that result from the assumptions one makes about the other; the seedy sexual aggression of Luca's Trip to Havana is undercut by the subtle yet intense lust of Breathe; while Leaving Cuba, with its closing image of Havana's night sky, is as eloquently balanced a tale of the lives of everyday Cubans as you will read in a long while - whichever path one takes, something is lost. As Aida Bahr, winner of Cuba's Premio de la Critica Literaria says, "relying more on subtleties than on drama, [Segal] portrays the tensions and struggles, but also the joy and warmth, that fill Cubans' lives."

A personal thank you from Randi Cooley Wilson, author of The Revelation Series to Rev readers. The time has come to celebrate the release of  Restoration, the fifth and final book in popular The Revelation Series. What a journey it’s been...

Goodbyes are never easy. They are often painful and full of sadness. Stepping away from these characters, and this story, is no exception. A few years ago, the voices of Asher and Eve infiltrated my head in a spellbinding way. I was captivated by their demand to be heard and moved by the story they asked me to tell. Never did I imagine, in all my wildest dreams, that they would enthrall your hearts and souls in the same way as they mesmerize mine. For that, I’m so grateful. In writing this series I have found my literary voice. My love. My passion.
So, here we are, at the final chapter on Eve and Asher’s journey. And what a journey it has been. I hope you have enjoyed each and every moment, as I have. May this story live forever on these pages and inside each of your hearts! I dedicate Restoration  to you.
Thank you, for embracing this series.
Thank you, for loving these characters.
Thank you, for taking this journey with me.

*Blog Tour* Learnng to Speak American by Colette Dartford

Today I have the pleasure of having Colette Dartford doing an interview today to promote her new book "Learning to Speak American

What is it like to pack up your life and move to America?

Frightening and exhilarating. Even though it was something my husband and I had talked about and planned, when the day came everything felt unreal, as though it was happening in slow motion. We were leaving the country of our birth and the life we had always known for something far away and different. It was our choice to do that of course, but it  didn’t make it any less daunting.

Did you face any challenges?

Many! At least Brits and Americans speak the same language (although the title of my novel may suggest otherwise) so we didn’t have that barrier to overcome, but America is an extremely bureaucratic country so we wasted a great deal of time and energy jumping through governmental hoops.

As this book is based on your own experiences of doing up a cottage can share any of the pitfalls?

Everything will take five times longer than you expect and cost twice as much. While the same might be said of England, as I mentioned in my previous comment, any construction project, especially in California, with its earthquakes and stringent environmental policies, is subject to a vast number of rules and regulations. I left all of that out of Learning To Speak American (too tedious, believe me), but the emotional rollercoaster certainly found it’s way into the novel.

What are the best spots in California to hang out?

San Francisco is an amazing city and breakfast in the Ferry Building, looking out at the double-decker Bay Bridge and the vast Pacific Ocean, is a great way to start the day.

In the Napa Valley, 80 miles north of San Francisco, you are truly spoilt for choice. I would recommend lunch on the deck of The Auberge de Soleil (where the fictional Duncan and Lola stay on their first visit to the area) with its elevated view across the valley floor. Or dinner at the cool Solage resort in Calistoga as the sun dips behind the mountains. And a nightcap at Bouchon in Yountville is the prefect end to any day.

What inspired you to become an author?

I have always been a prolific reader and though I love writing too, it was really more of a hobby until I moved to the Napa Valley. It was the beauty of the place that inspired Learning To Speak American, and the warmth and kindness of its people.

And finally what's instore next??

In the immediate future I'm busy promoting Learning To Speak American and off to take part in the Sharjah International Book Fair.

My second novel, The Sinners, is being published by Bonnier in 2017 and I'm currently working on the edits for that. I have a third novel in progress too - Writing For Prizes. When the writing bug gets hold of you, it doesn’t let go!
