Today it is our stop and the stop in the UK Blog Tour for Whisper. I am super excited to have Chrissie on the blog with a guest and the lovely people over at Templar have kindly offered ONE copy of the book in a giveaway for the UK Mainland. Also my review is just in the post before this one :)
Getting addicted to first person by Chrissie Keighery
I have a confession. I’m an addict.
It took me 18 months to write Whisper. It was an easy decision to write Demi in first person, since I wanted the reader to experience Demi’s journey as she does. Which is fine.
The trouble is….I can’t seem to get out of first person. I’ve been commissioned to write three books in a new series called Girl V the World. The initial contract asks for these books to be written in third person. But I conveniently forgot about that when I began. When my editor saw the first draft, in first person, she reminded me. Luckily, she let it go. As Hilary put it : If it felt so right for you to do it that way, we should go with it.
It does feel right. This morning, I wrote a scene that made me tear up. Go figure! I’m not sure it would have had that effect if I’d tried it in third person. First allows so much intimacy with the main character. That’s the up side. The down side is that it’s harder to create three dimensional secondary characters. Everything they do/say/think has to be filtered through the main character’s eyes.
It’s a trade off. I’ve written loads of books in the past that were third person, and I hope I’m not boxing myself into one particular approach.
So, here’s a pledge. I, Chrissie Keighery, will try to wean myself off first person and diversify my writing.
We’ll see….

ReplyDeletelovely giveaway.. as a complete bookworm myself this is the place for me!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about 1st person pov--but it refers to reading it as well as writing it for me. I love the personal connection that comes with 1st person--allows the reader (and the writer during crafting) to have a much deeper emotional attachment with the MC(s). Of course, there's also that downside you've already mentioned of getting in deep enough it can affect you on a whole other level.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. :o)
