Description:
Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed.

She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It's the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it's not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever.

Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles.

Review:
Taking On the Dead has been on my wishlist for so so long. So when the author asked me if I would like to review of course I said Hell Yeah! I was really exciting and had very high hopes after reading quite a few glowing reviews I have to admit even though overall I did enjoy the book, I was sadly disappointed aswell. :(

Kan (Kansas) has been on her own for the past four years, after her whole world changed when people started turning into Zombies. However, since she has been on her own she doesn't really know the full extent of just how much the world outside her home has changed. But she soon discovers very quickly and not everything is as she expects. She goes on a journey and along the way she finds new friends and new love and she wants to help other survivors using her own knowledge. However, it's not so easy when the Famished (Super Fast Zombies) are attacking.

Kan is one of those characters I think you love straight away. She is kick ass and strong. She doesn't rely on anyone but herself. At 24 she has had to deal with so much because of the OutBreak of Zombies. Losing people she loved. However, it makes her who she is. She is a survivor but what I really liked about her is that even though she is strong, there is a vulnerable side to her. She is caring and loving. Just a well round protaganist that most people will like to read about. When she meets Rudy, they develop a friendship, they enjoy flirting and teasing each and you get the impression that it may develop into something more. However, like most books at the moment, the author throws in a love triangle with Mac. Now I am all for them but I just didn't think it was needed in this. I like Mac, he is funny and really liked Kan but I personally just didn't think it was right for story. Maybe it story will develop more in book 2 and I will change my mind but for it being in this one, I didn't think it fit within the story.

Taking On The Dead is a Zombie novel. I haven't read many but what I have I usually enjoy. So for a Zombie novel you do expect blood and guts and you do get it with this one. Annie doesn't hold back with her descriptions and quite often I have to stop reading because I am not used to reading books that are so gory. LOL. That is not a bad thing, it's perfect fora  Zombie novel and I wouldn't expect anything less. It was pretty awesome and if you have a strong stomach then you will have no problems with it. I personally don't have strong stomach lol. I am useless with gore lol. As I said that is not a bad thing. But very good thing for a Zombie novel :)

Now, the plot is were I did have problems. Don't get me wrong I did overall find the story good. However, the story was up and down a lot. There was never a steady flow. It was either going a very slow pace or a very fast paced. And of course mostly all books there is ups and downs with how a story flows but sadly Taking on the Dead there just didn't seem to be a middle ground. I bored through the slow parts but during those fast parts OMG action galore. The fast parts are exciting, thrilling and at times scary (well for me) There are quite a few twists and turns that at times I had no clue what was going on and let left me confused. One minutes I was reading Taking On the Dead and the next the scene would change and I felt like I was reading a  different book. That only happened a couple of times and for the most part the plot to Taking on the Dead is good and unque.

Overall, I did enjoy Taking On The Dead, and I do recommend you read it if  you like a good gory story. Annie has wrote a good story that leaves the reading wanted more and I am really excited for read book 2 because the ending was fantastic!

Note: this is not a YA novel. It does have Mature Content :)

  3. Great review. The lack of blood and gore is a plus. I've been reading a lot of zombie novels lately and that's the only part that I really don't like, which seems kind of silly considering, well, they are zombie novels. But I like the post-apocalyptic-survival aspect of zombie books. Even though there were some flaws in the pacing and a dreaded love triangle, this still sounds pretty promising. I'm looking forward to reading it.
