The Color of Grace by Linda Kage
When my mother remarried after thirteen years of being a widow, I had to move to a new town and enroll in a new school. Suddenly thrust into an entirely different kind of life, I just wanted to go home. I didn’t want to meet new people, didn’t want to leave my old friends, didn’t want to become a third wheel to my mom and her husband….and I really didn’t want to see Ryder Yates again. Ugh, I still don’t know why I turned down that too-good-to-be-true boy who flirted with me when we were attending separate schools.
But honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was worse.
Who knew becoming lost in a new life could help a girl find her true colors?
Guest Post THE LOVE TRIANGLE
Nothing
makes me bawl while reading a story like a depressing tale of
unrequited love. I just can’t handle them. I’m a romance junkie; I NEED a
happily ever after. I crave watching two people who are meant to
be together hooking up body and soul. I like the loyalty of them
setting eyes on each other and never straying.
That’s
why I’m not a big fan of the love triangle. When there are three
people, someone is going to get pushed out and someone is going to get
completely crushed. It devastates me to read these stories. And though I
could not put down New Moon, I think I cried through three-fourths of the book.
However, I realize there are two schools of thought on this issue.
Some people really get into the love triangle.
They go all Team Aiden or Team Seth and buy the t-shirts and
tote bags to show off their alliance (Love you, Aiden!). For the
character, it’s an adventure to play the field and experience different
personalities before settling down with the right fit. It can be fun and
exciting—a mystery as well as a romance—trying to figure out which two
are going to pair off by the end. That’s one of the reasons I couldn’t
put The Hunger Games down either. Would Katniss end up with Peeta or Gale (I’m a Team Peeta girl, btw)?
In my newest story, The Color of Grace,
two best friends try to get into a tug-of-war over the heroine, Grace.
She desperately doesn’t want to get stuck in the middle of them, but
despite her grand plans, sometimes that’s exactly where she finds
herself. Stuck!
The
story doesn’t really have a love triangle because like I said, I can’t
handle them. It’s pretty clear who her main squeeze is. But for you
love-triangle enthusiasts out there, I DO have a few scenes that shift
Grace’s affections from one boy to the other!
So
tell me, which category do you fall under: (A) I gotta know who the
hero and heroine are from page one. Or (B) toss in a love triangle
because I wanna guess who’ll end up together?
Thank you Linda for that guest post. I personally love a good love triangle but only if it fits the story, - Sio

comment from Misty @ Bookaholics Book Club: " I'm not a huge fan of love triangles but sometimes they do add an extra depth to the story. It all just depends on the writing really :)"

Some love triangles are great but other times they get on my nerves... sometimes they are not needed and I can't remember the last time I read a book without one!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway! :) xoxox
I know what you mean. Most novels seems to have them :)
DeleteThey do seem to be all over the place, especially in a series books!
DeleteAlthough the last book I read didnt that's always good. :) I only like them when they the fit the story. But it annoys me when they just get thrown into the story just gor the sake of it. :)
DeleteLove triangles can make a story more interesting especially if both parties are equalling good.
ReplyDeleteAs frustrating as the whole love triangle thing can be, especially if your choice isn't winning, they keep a story interesting.
ReplyDelete90% of the time they annoy me big time. I feel that the author just throws one in because they couldn't think of anything else to keep the story going. But sometimes they can be intersting.

I think most YA readers (including me, most definitely) have started to feel (actually - have been feeling for some time now) that love triangles in YA fiction have become way overdone. Many novels now try to focus on these triangles, assuming that we meet two sweet hot guys, we don't need an actual plot to love the book. Not true!! I am so very glad Linda didn't include a love triangle in her story!
ReplyDeleteLove your choices! I am definitely Team Peeta and Team Aiden as well. =)
ReplyDeleteHmmmm I think it really depends. For the most part I think love triangles are too cliche, because they seem to be put there for no reason at all. I'd rather read about a slowly developing relationship between two people and have it feel real.
That's a tough one...I think I like a love triangle...what I hate is unrequited misunderstanding. For example when the lovers are together, but then one catches the other with another person, assumes the worst scenario and does something really drastic to hurt their partner before finding out the details. Drives me nuts...
