What was the inspiration behind the story?

I was inspired to write the Atlantis Rising series after taking an anthropology class that focused on undersea archaeology. The lost island of Atlantis is accepted as fiction these days, but I had a great professor who did a lecture on the theories early archaeologist had about where it may have been. I was intrigued and reviewed Plato’s telling of the story.

He described Atlantis as an island of lush vegetation, meadows, lakes, and streams. He wrote that the climate was so mild the people had two harvest a year instead of one. In the beginning they lived simple, peaceful lives and valued equality in economics and government. The gods noticed and rewarded them with advancements in technology, art, and science. There was a downside, though. Innovation made them rich, and wealth corrupted them.

The people of Atlantis started sending warriors out to invade other civilizations for plunder. The gods who had once favored them were angered. They help the Athenians defeat them in a great battle and sent floods, fire, and earthquakes to shake Atlantis. No sooner did the dejected warriors arrive home, than the island sank into the sea.

With Plato’s version of the story as background, I imagined a scenario where some of the people of Atlantis escaped before the island sank. The Atlantis Rising series is about the adventures of their modern-day descendants.

Gloria Craw grew up in the desert southwest, inspired every day by the wide skies and rich colors around her. She attended the University of Utah where she earned a degree in anthropology. These days, she lives in the ‘burbs’ just outside of Seattle, Washington, where she is the shepherd of a husband, four daughters, and a very hairy dog.
