Description:
Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives--and the way they understand each other so completely--has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.

Review:
There are almost no words to describe my feelings for this book. Several people had described it as a heart-wrenching modern-day Romeo and Juliet while others just said it would be a difficult read. Tabitha Suzuma created a novel that will stay with me for a very long, long time. While the plot was slightly controversial as it centered around consensual incest, it was hard not to fall in love with both Lochan and Maya. Their home life tugged at your heart strings and their lives were anything but easy. Tabitha Suzuma illustrated this wonderfully as she described their relationship and how their love was far from ordinary.

Instead of being taken aback by their feelings, I found myself being drawn in by their love. The raising of their young siblings in the absence of their mother made a situation that should seem so wrong have a sense of almost purity to it. Their love for each other was so true and unconditional that it was almost painful to watch them struggle with the boundaries of their lives and the confines of society.

That said, the writing was beautiful and I was unable to put the book down. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough yet I didn't want the story to end because I had grown to love these two characters so much that my heart literally hurt for them. The whole book was an intense roller coaster of emotion from start to finish and the ending for me was a tidal wave of tears. I knew from the moment I picked the book up that it would not have a happily-ever-after, but I had no idea how it would end and I was shocked to my very core. This is a very powerful story of love, loss, and ultimate sacrifice. I will treasure this book and one day know I will read it again.

  6. It was wonderful! Alba, the last part was hard but it didn't end quite how I expected. I would recommend this to everyone but be prepared for a heartbreaking story. The subject matter isn't bothersome surprisingly - the emotional roller coaster is what gets you. But I fell in love with the characters, the story, and the author!
